Jet Drag Chute Systems

GLOBAL FLYER JET DRAG CHUTE SYSTEM

(ABOVE): Two switches above top Chelton EFIS at instrument panel top center release drag chutes from parachute canisters in the trailing edge of the wing.

(BOTTOM):
Photos of inflated guide surface drag chutes deployed in flight and landing at Salina, Kansas prior to take off for world record flight. (Note drag chute below tail boom). Drag chutes can be deployed at high altitude cruise for emergency decent from high altitude and for landing to get down and reduce landing float and landing roll out distance. The aircraft is so aerodynamically efficent, that extending landing gear and deploying drag chutes are necessary to create sufficient drag for decent and landing approach. The Global flyer is difficult to land without the drag chutes. With very high apect ratio wings, the Global Flyer is a high performance glider. Pilot has the option to deploy 1 or both drag chutes for landing. Both drag chutes deployed in flight in left photo and Fosset landing at Salina, Kansas with left drag chute deployed in right photo.
